I just noticed that I hadn't posted all week except on Monday... if you have any ideas about how I can supplement the descriptive writing I will have them doing, let me know!
On another note, as you all know we are reading Sign of the Beaver in our novel study. Matt is trying to teach Attean how to read and is having difficulty thinking of words to associate each letter with. And here came a brilliant idea... I decided to have my 3 periods make ABC books out of Indian words or words that were related to nature that Indians would come on contact with. I gave each student a planning sheet yesterday and explained it before going to the computer lab. Each student was in charge of a different letter. You can check out the planning sheet right here. I also put up a PDF on my webpage with various webites that would be useful for the students while they were searching. I am going to look at their 3 choices and see which one in the best. Then I am going to send home their sheet of the ABC book to complete. **This is going to be completed at home and will be due Wednesday, April 25th.*** I am planning on laminating and binding the books so that I can display them in my classroom.
I will post pictures as I get them in... I am sure that some of the sheets will be AWESOME!!
I hope everyone had a fabulous Friday!! And if you have anything that you could give me to supplement this novel study.. let me know!! :)
Yowza!

I have read Sign of the Beaver every year for 15 years...love this book. One of my students did an ABC book on Scratch a free program that creates cartoon like pictures with movements and sounds. Another took pictures of items Matt would encounter in our woods, found their name, scientific name, what he could use them for (medicine, food, spice,) or dont eat. LOVED this. We also created a trail in our wooded area around the school in teams with natural marks and teams tried to find markings. They made maps to accompany their trails and named their trails. We later used GPS to mark our trails. Planted corn in summer and we did lots with corn too.
ReplyDeleteLife saver! I just started my first full-time teaching job (5th/6th) a couple of weeks ago and have been beyond overwhelmed jumping in mid-year. I came back from spring break today planning to start "From the Mixed-Up Files..." with the 5th graders only to find out that their 3rd grade teacher used it as a read-a-loud. After some super quick online research and the few fun resources you've already posted I feel like I can confidently pick up "The Sign of the Beaver" and just go for it! Love your blog, glad I found it :)
ReplyDeleteWe have been keeping a journal and writing after every couple of chapters in Mitt's point of view. I even have a rubric. Let me know.. I can let you know what I am doing. I'll try and remember to upload the rubric for the journal and pics of some tomorrow! :) Glad to be helpful!
DeleteI just started Sign of the Beaver in my class and I just love love this idea! Do you have each ABC page, or is this a preview because I only seem to get the Y.
ReplyDeleteYes it was just the letter Y. I didn't save each letter... I just changed and printed. Sorry!
DeleteNot a problem! Thank so much for the idea!
